Association Jeanne Jugan

The Association Jeanne Jugan is an association of the lay faithful who desire to participate more fully in the charism transmitted by Saint Jeanne Jugan, adapting it to their state in life.

At St. Joseph’s Residence, we are a group of men and women who strive to be champions of the elderly poor and those in our community who might need our assistance.

We spent a year in prayerful preparation for our role as Association Jeanne Jugan members and on the feast of our Patron, St. Joseph, May 1, publicly committed to spending a year helping our Residents and Little Sisters in daily activities and educating the community about our Home. Each year, we renew this commitment of service.

What do we actually do? A lot – quietly.

We sit with the ill and dying, make beds, peel vegetables, staff the gift shop, serve at parties and picnics, work in the laundry or just sit, have a cup of coffee and chat on a long, winter afternoon.

Being a member of the Association Jeanne Jugan also has many spiritual benefits. There is a monthly Mass for the intentions of our Associates and their families around the world. We use that occasion to gather, enjoy each other’s company and plan our projects.

Young Helpers Are Always Welcome

Are you a young adult, high school or college student looking for a way to make a difference in the world, for some place to volunteer your time and talents?

Are you a youth minister looking for a worthwhile service site for your group?

You’ve come to the right place!

Young people bring a great deal of joy to the elderly. The two generations seem to understand each other very well.

Our Home is blessed with many young volunteers who come from high schools and colleges, sometimes as part of their education work. Often, they develop bonds with the Residents and want to keep coming after their course work. It’s even been known for them to bring their Prom dates to the Home before they begin their evening of celebration.

Youth service options at Saints Joseph’s Residence include:

  • Mass with the Residents and Little Sisters – every day at 11 a.m.
  • Helping to serve the noon meal to the Residents
  • Helping to animate activities with the Residents
  • Providing music and entertainment – our Residents always enjoy performances by school groups!
  • School class or youth group could sponsor an event – a bingo party or another special activity

I have been volunteering at the Residence now for about a month. Not only do I feel needed but I was also welcomed by everyone here since day one. Walking down the halls you will always see a smiling face. Everyone is so nice and I meet new people every day. The Residents love when I visit and are always making jokes about living in a “crazy” house. I enjoy coming to volunteer because to me it feels like a second home. I love to help people and Sister always finds ways to put me to work. Since I want to be a nurse, volunteering at the Residence lets me see what it would be like and gives me extra experience before going to college. It has been so much fun volunteering and if I could, I would volunteer – every day of the week.

I love volunteering at St. Joseph’s Residence. When I first started volunteering at St. Joe’s, everyone was so welcoming. The first day I volunteered, I was able to play Bingo with some of the Residents. The Residents are so nice and appreciative of everything you do for them. Everyone at St. Joe’s makes it enjoyable for me to volunteer. The Sisters and the Residents are always full of laughter and smiles. I feel so lucky to be able to volunteer at St. Joe’s, knowing that I am able to make a difference in my community. I really enjoy volunteering at St. Joe’s and it is a wonderful experience for me.
